A closer look at the DJI Modify – the 3D model editing software compatible with DJI enterprise drones

DJI, the world’s leader in civil drones and creative camera technology, this year introduced DJI Modify, the company’s first intelligent 3D model editing software. This complementary solution pairs seamlessly with DJI’s enterprise drones and 3D modelling and mapping software, DJI Terra, forming a comprehensive solution for aerial surveying, modelling and model editing, to meet the operational needs for surveying, transportation and emergency response such as firefighting.

“Complex model processing work has been a challenge for the aerial survey industry for a long time. As DJI‘s first intelligent 3D model editing software, DJI Modify has completed the last piece of the puzzle in DJI’s entire enterprise solution from data collection and data processing to model editing,” said Christina Zhang, Senior Director of Corporate Strategy at DJI. “We believe this will lead the editing of live 3D models to a more intelligent new realm, empowering surveyors, transportation operators and first responders to improve their workflow.”

Seamless workflow with DJI Terra

DJI Modify integrates seamlessly with DJI Terra, providing a smooth solution from modelling to editing. With one click, users can launch DJI Modify in any DJI Terra project, automatically generating files for model editing that include pre-identified objects and pre-processing steps. This makes it akin to Photoshop for 3D models, allowing for efficient repairs of common defects. Note that DJI Modify only supports models created by DJI Terra.

Efficient 3D model editing

DJI Modify features an intuitive interface with intelligent editing tools that are user-friendly and require no complex settings. Model files can be quickly imported and exported in formats like ply, obj and b3dm, ensuring compatibility with DJI Terra and third-party software. Future updates may enable cloud sharing for processed models.

The software supports auto-repair editing for flattening, texture editing, water surface repairs, floating part removal and hole filling. Users can opt for one-click repairs or manually select areas for editing. DJI Modify’s technology allows for viewing and editing both high- and low-quality models in a single interface, with changes synchronised for immediate preview. This streamlines the editing process, making it fast and efficient.

Overall, DJI Modify enhances the workflow for 3D modelling projects, allowing users to begin editing quickly without extensive learning, thus reducing the modelling workload significantly.

Floating parts removal

Multiple selection methods

Beyond mouse-framing to select masses of floating parts or clicking to pick individual ones for a single selection (each single selection replaces the previous one), DJI Modify also supports grouping selection results with the Add to Selection and Subtract from Selection functions. These allow you to select the floating parts accurately without repeatedly loading high-quality models or manually selecting them.

One-click removal

After selecting the floating parts, you can easily remove them using the Remove Floating Parts button in the interface or the Delete/Backspace key on your keyboard, facilitating convenient, fast removal. You can also quickly preview the model after the removal.

Flattening

Multiple selection methods

Supports mouse-framing a polygon for a single selection of a region (replacing the previous selection) or grouping selection results with the Add to Selection and Subtract from Selection functions for selecting irregular regions as needed.

Vehicle flattening and texture repair

By clicking the Vehicle button in the panel, DJI Modify identifies and promptly selects the vehicles in the current view. Click the Flatten button in the menu to flatten all vehicle meshes. DJI Modify then automatically smooths the textures in the flattened areas, ensuring the repair is seamless and aesthetically pleasing.

One-click flattening

Whether selecting a single region or grouping multiple selection results, you won’t be bothered by the hassle of adjusting parameters—click the Flatten button to instantly flatten all selected meshes, speedily addressing protrusions on surfaces, such as vehicles or pedestrians.

Texture repair

Polygon select: DJI Modify supports repairing textures within a polygonal selection, making refining the model’s irregular regions simple.

Erase: Selecting Erase allows DJI Modify to match and repair a selected area with the surrounding patterns, delivering a fast and authentic texture repair.

Clone: Choosing Clone means that after selecting a pattern within a specific area using the repair tool, you can drag it to the area needing repair. DJI Modify seamlessly blends the pattern edges with the surrounding region, providing a smoothly repaired effect.

Hole fill

Hole contour detection: DJI Modify automatically and accurately identifies holes in the model, outlining and highlighting the contours to eliminate the need for manual work.

Frame/click select: You can quickly and precisely repair selected holes by using the mouse to click or frame the hole’s perimeter.

One-click fill: DJI Modify supports one-click repair of selected holes, automatically fixing the hole textures with excellent blending results, even allowing efficient, precise editing of complex, hard-to-identify holes within the model.

Custom select: You can also custom-select the hole contour and repair it more flexibly according to your needs.

Water surface repair

Custom range: You can create and adjust the water surface on the model, tweaking the range, height, shape, and position to suit the model better.

Quick generation: While drawing the water surface, DJI Modify smartly fills it with either texture patterns or a chosen custom colour, swiftly generating a smooth water surface in real time to optimise the repair of water scenes.

Cloud sharing, quick delivery

DJI Modify renders and exports models rapidly in many formats, such as ply, obj, and b3dm, which are compatible with DJI Terra and third-party software. Processed models can be quickly shared to the cloud, so others can view them online on the web or mobile via shared links without installing any software.
